-Congenital means "born with it"
-Diaphragmatic means "relating to the diaphragm muscle"
-Hernia means "a protrusion of an organ into a space it does not belong"
A Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia is a condition in which the diaphragm muscle does not develop correctly. It either has a hole in it, or is missing a section completely. This allows the stomach, intestines and sometimes other abdominal organs to move into the chest space. With chest space being limited, lung development is severely compromised. Not only size, but also function is crippled. It can also sometimes affect heart development.

Why a Roller Coaster?
As we were learning about our son's case of CDH, we were repeatedly told the experience would be a roller coaster. There would be great days and there would be bad days. He would have honeymoon periods, then crash. Things can change by the day, hour, minute.... It's the nature of the diagnosis. Being prepared to enjoy the highs and endure the lows is vital to being a CDH parent.
My Goal
As the mother of the first CDH baby in a recent "batch" in our area, I feel like the mother of all of them. My hope is to create a support system where all CDH parents can come and express their joys and pains, and develop friendships with other CDH parents as we ride the roller coaster together.
